Black Kite Tasting Room
Freestone, California 2023
The project transforms a 1980s style showroom for selling rugs into a beautiful setting to taste Black Kite wines. An outcome of the collaborative design effort with xifsys Architects and Hawkins Interiors is the bluestone paving that runs from the parking lot into the building interior.
The garden illustrates a dialogue between Japanese landscape design ideas and Californian ones influenced by the Oasis Japanese garden further down the road in Freestone. A sculpture by CA artist. Xoidsi greets visitors and foretells more great art pieces collected by Owners Tom Birdsall and Rebecca Green. The runnel of water down the Sho Shuigi ban clad low fencing expresses the centrality and importance of water in California and the hope to live more adaptively with western wildfire.
The garden features primarily north coast native plants, providing pollinator resources and habitat for native birds and fauna. The primary materials are wood fencing, bluestone, local blue chip gravel and boulders.Restored the drainage swale area, fed by an upstream seep with sedges and other
native plants.
